A Beautiful Addiction!

Hi, I’m Louise De Masi, a professional watercolour artist and qualified teacher.

Since 2000, I’ve lived on the beautiful Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. My home sits on 25 acres beside state forest, so the natural world is part of my everyday life.

Birds visit the garden constantly, and I’m surrounded by the flora and fauna that so often find their way into my paintings. I find a lot of peace in nature, and it continues to be one of my greatest sources of inspiration.

Art Has Always Been Part of My Life

Art has been part of my life since I was a child. After leaving high school, I worked in a number of jobs, including signwriting. That eventually led me to begin painting in acrylics, and for many years I also taught painting at a local art studio.

After nearly a decade of working mainly in acrylics, though, I began to lose some of the joy I had once found in painting.

Then, in 2011, I discovered watercolour.

At the time, I was also working as a primary school teacher. I became completely absorbed in learning this beautiful and unpredictable medium, and in 2014 I retired from teaching so I could focus on my painting career full time.

My Life as an Artist

Since then, I’ve been fortunate to build a creative career around something I genuinely love.

My paintings have been sold to collectors around the world, and some of my work has been licensed both in Australia and the United States. I also co-authored a watercolour instruction book 'The Art of Painting Sea Life in Watercolor'.

In 2019, I began teaching watercolour online, sharing the same step-by-step approach I had used during my years as a classroom teacher.

Today, I teach students around the world through my online classes, where I guide them through complete paintings and explain not only what I’m doing, but why I’m doing it.

I also share watercolour demonstrations, painting tips and techniques on YouTube.

Why I Love Watercolour

Watercolour still fascinates me.

I love the way the paint moves on the paper, the way colours mingle, and the balance between control and allowing the medium to do something unexpected.

It can look intimidating when you see a finished painting, but I’ve learned that even quite detailed subjects become much more manageable when they’re broken down into smaller steps.

That’s something I try to bring into my teaching as well. I want students to understand what’s happening on the paper, what to look for, and why I make particular decisions as I paint.

My hope is that, over time, they become more confident making those decisions for themselves.

Life Beyond Painting

Aside from painting, I’m the proud mother of three grown children and grandmother to three beautiful grandchildren, who bring a great deal of joy to my life.

When I’m not painting or filming classes, I enjoy being at home, spending time with family and appreciating the wildlife and natural surroundings that continue to inspire so much of my work.
